All travel involves some risk, whether you're driving on a busy highway, staying in a hotel, or traveling to another country.
Several sources publish safety rankings for countries to help travelers make decisions. The U.S. State Department ranks travel to Morocco as equally safe compared to most European countries, including France, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Sweden, Belgium, Denmark, and more.
Many global indexes list travel to Morocco as safer than most European countries.
This is due to several factors:
As with almost every country, petty crime such as pickpocketing, etc. exists. Our expert guides remain with us during all in-country travel and every planned activity to provide understanding of Moroccan cultural norms and recommended actions to make our experiences safe and enjoyable.
Solea Travel does not provide transportation to or accommodations for off-itinerary activities.
As we move around the country during our Moroccan experiences, we cannot coordinate travelers' return to a different location.
The cost of our packages cannot be reduced for alternate plans or activities.
Your insurance policy purchased for the trip does provide in-country coverage, however it will be the traveler's sole responsibility for arrangements should a health or other issue occur during travel outside of the published itinerary.
Weather
We have chosen October as our Moroccan travel month to take advantage what is typically a beautiful season there.
Northern Morocco can become chilly, with snow in late fall and winter; all of Morocco can be extremely warm in the summer. In October we hope to avoid these extremes!
That said, plan to pack layers with very comfortable apparel and footwear that works for sitting in a van, walking on uneven pavement at times, and protecting yourself from the sun. There is approximately 25 days of sun in October, and rainfall is very infrequent.
Our transportation and all our lodging offers air-conditioning.
Dress
Morocco is a country of many colors and vibrant sites, inhabited by a generally conservative population. You'll see throughout our travels that large cities are more accepting of different attire while rural areas are less so.
You will need longer shorts or plain skirts below the knee. Denim jeans are acceptable as are plain t-shirts (avoiding provocative words or political statements). Uncovered arms are also acceptable, but tube tops, tops with spaghetti straps, or low-cut tees or blouses are not well-accepted.
You do not need to wear a hijab and no one will make you feel uncomfortable for not doing so. Many Moroccan women, particularly in the larger cities, do not wear them.
There will be no formal activities requiring dressy clothing.
For those planning to join the add-on to Tangier for the Northern experience, or Essaouria for the Southern experience, regular swimming trunks or one-piece swimsuits are common attire at the beach.
The Moroccan currency is the Dirham. You will want some dirham to shop in the markets or for other low-cost products you see along the way, and to pay for the few meals not covered by the trip package.
Vendors will expensive items such as rugs or other housewares accept credit cards.
Solea Travel will provide a recommendation on how much to convert before your trip, and best practices so that you get the most for your USD (United States Dollars).
Our guides will provide very helpful tips on where to shop for what (for example, the same rug in Casablanca might cost half the price elsewhere), how to ensure you receive the right change for cash payments, and provide tips on how to bargain on price - a common and encouraged practice in markets!
Moroccan's speak a very specific dialect of Arabic called Darija. It is not the Arabic you learn on language learning apps. French is also a national language spoken throughout Morocco.
The Berbers in the South additionally speak an Amazigh language, and Moroccans in Northern cities may also speak Spanish.
You will not need to learn anything new but if you are interested in taking up some common phrases, Solea will provide a quick guide to help you learn them...and impress the Moroccans you meet!
We'll include in your information packet more detail about cultural norms such as tipping and other courtesies.
